Describes some safe work practices for working with bench grinders.
An angle grinder is a hand-held tool carried to the work, with the disc secured at an angle to the body of the grinder. An offhand grinder, which may be fixed to a bench or a pedestal, is usually fitted with one or two abrasive discs revolving at right angles to the spindle turned by a motor.

Noises from hand-held tools, like grinders, pedestals and bench grinders, can exceed noise exposure standards, making them dangerous for workers. This document advises workplaces how to manage noise by: following a hierarchy of control measures; finding alternatives to using grinders, such as buying pre-cut or pre-fabricated materials
Note: 9 inch (230 mm) angle grinders have been banned on some work sites due to the increased risk of injury. The increased power and size of the unit will cause more severe kickback and gyroscopic effects (i.e. makes the grinder difficult to manoeuvre).
Employees required to use angle grinders must be fully informed of the hazards, and instructed in safe work procedures. Safe work procedures should include avoiding, where practicable, the use of angle grinders for cutting.
